Think I got duped... Labrador is really a mix... what size at 5 months?

Hi everyone..

I bought a yellow Lab puppy about three months ago. The breeder had to vacate his home and get rid of all his animals and a friend hooked me up with a yellow lab puppy.

The thing is... I'm starting to get the idea that I got a mutt instead of the Lab they claimed she was. Now, before all you guys start yelling at me for discriminating against mutts, let me assure that she is very loved and well taken care of and that her breeding does not affect my opinion.

It turns out that she is about 1-2 months older than originally , according to the local vet, that the person selling her claimed, and is now about to lose her canine teeth. They are loose... and should come out withing 2 weeks. My question is: How old is a puppy when she loses her canines? AND.. how much can I expect her to grow (%) after she loses them? She weighs 15 kilos now and looks like a perfect teenage version of a LAB.. maybe a bit smallish., so how much will her adult size be?

Think I got duped... Labrador is really a mix... what size at 5 months?
Size can vary considerably, even within purebred dogs of the same breed. Size alone certainly doesn't tell you if the dog is a purebred or not. According to AKC standard, the height at the withers for a female lab is 21.5 to 23.5 inches. Weight for dogs in "working condition" is listed as 55-70 lbs. That said, by no means do all purebred dogs fit within the standard. Sometimes a dog is sold as a pet (rather than a show prospect) because it does not fit the standard.

Puppies usually start to lose their baby teeth at approx. 4mos. of age, but it can vary some with the individual, chewing habits, diet, etc.. Your vet is the best source for information on this.

At this point I would just chalk this up to experience, and enjoy your new puppy. I have both pet and show quality dogs. Some from breeders, others from rescue. I love them all.
Reply:when she stops growing that's how big she'll be. all dogs grow differently.
Reply:Just like humans dogs mature and age much differently. the dog could still be a lab and the only way to tell is to get blood tests done. she should be more then 75 lbs. max.
Reply:Labs can come in different sizes because it could of been a small female and male lab that made the pup but it would be great if you could add a picture so we could try and tell you what we think
Reply:We have a lab mix - we think with a boxer - and she is a bit smaller than my brothers purebred male. Her ideal weight is around 75 lbs. and the top of her shoulders is about 22 inches. My brother's lab is a bit taller and heavier by maybe 20 lbs and a half a head in height..
Reply:Puppies start losing their “baby” teeth between four and six months of age.

for her size there is no definite answer, I know of 2 people who have lab mixes, one is about 30 pounds and short/tiny and the other is over 100 pounds, he is huge!
Reply:Well you got duped for sure!

Don't worry it could happen to anyone. I had a golden/flat coat mix and she was about 15 pounds heavier than a golden and 5 pounds heavier than a flat coat. So if tyour pup is a little smaller than a teenage lab and is around 3 to 4 months she so she will probably be a little smaller or a little bigger than a lab. It's hard to tell when you don't know who the parents are or how old she is.

Finally thank you for calling your dog a mutt and be proud of it unlike most people who would take any two dog breed names and pretend their dog is purebred!

Good luck with your new dog!
Reply:Her adult size is not easy to say. Some dogs grow quick, some grow slow. As for labs- I have seen very short, tiny purebred labs (35-40 lbs healthy, full grown) and I have seen purebred labs that were 120 lbs as a healthy adult weight. times kg by 2.24 to get lbs.

As for age of loosing canine teeth, that can very within a month or so as well.
Reply:Did you meet the breeder of the labs that show their animals? Did you get the AKC papers of the parents and their genetic testing before you bought the puppy?

No? FUTURE DOG OWNERS - do your homework so this doesn't happen to you!
Reply:Big dogs grow until they are just over a year old. Dogs loose canines at 5-7 months.
Reply:They start to lose their teeth approx 14-16 weeks of age.
Reply:I would like to answer this question, but I don't know that much about dogs. Your question about indesign is in voting now, I can't edit my response.
