Braces on the NHS for adults?
nhs dentists are only obliged to maintain your oral health. anything else they can quote u private that's if ur dental surgeon has orthodontic skill and your mouth is kept immaculately clean .so unfortunately u'll have to start saving.
Reply:once a person turns 19 they have to pay for braces whether they are onincome support on not
Reply:You will have to pay .My neice had a big problem with the alignment of her teeth . Although they said she needed braces from an early age nothing was done . When she got to old for a free brace ie 19 they decided she needed one but it was her responsibility . Like you it was going to cost her £1000 . So even now she has problems at the age of 34 noone will help her . So sorry you are responsible.
Reply:Unfortunately not, you should have got it done in your teens. I too haven't got perfect teeth and went to private orthodontist, he said price would be £4,200, pay a £1000 deposit and you pay it off monthly in installments. I can't afford this but have seen some great results on my daughter's teenage friends. My daughter's teeth are 99% perfect but I am still going to take advantage of the free treatment and get her braces so that her teeth will be 100%. Braces were a stigma when I was young and I wish my mum had forced me to get them.
Reply:It seems so unfair that you can't get any free or cheap health care regarding orthodontic work. If you have a teaching hospital with a dental unit anywhere nearby, it could be worth applying. They might take on your case if it is anything unusual, as they have students in training. I did try this method myself, but without any luck. I regret not having my teeth straightened as a youngster, but the stigma then was far too great. We also lived in a 'put up and shut up' age! I am 50 now and have just started major orthodontic work. I am having 'Invisalign' braces from California USA, which are almost invisible. The total bill was £4,200 with a 5% discount for paying in full up front. I can ill afford this money, but am happy to go without ALL luxuries and non essentials to pay for it. I am cutting all my other expenses to the absolute bone, as I want to be proud of my very expensive smile. Good luck with your teeth.
Reply:Sadly once you are over the age of 18 orthodontic treatment is not covered on the National health.

In some cases of patients my dentist has referred for ortho treatment, they have been told they will have to pay and these are patients under 18.

If the orthodontist feels that the treatment is not warranted and is purely for cosmetic reasons then he/she will charge for this treatment.

It might be worth booking an appointment to see your regular dentist and see if he/she can offer alternative treatment.
Reply:Hi you CAN get braces on the NHS considering how bad your teeth are and if you are willing to wait 1-2 years to get seen. There is a waiting list for adult ortho on the NHS and its very difficult to get on the list but its worth a try.....see you dentist!

Failing that you will have to pay roughly £2000 for them as income support does not make you exempt.
