Do i need braces?
If alignment issues are preventing the teeth from erupting from the gums then you'll probably have to have surgery first. Braces can only be used once all teeth have grown in. If your canines haven't come down at all, and are prevented from doing so, you probably need to talk to a dentist about oral surgery.

When I was about 7 or 8 I had to have an extra tooth removed via oral surgery. It was blocking one of my two upper front teeth from coming down. The procedures usually take a few hours and you're in and out the same day... Just don't expect to be talking for a while after with the fat lips you'll have from the Novocaine...

Once the canines have been pulled down you will most likely need braces for sure. Keep in mind, however, that getting braces is always a personal decision and never one a dentist/orthodontist forces on you. They can recommend it, but nothing more.

I had two sets of braces when I was younger, but my teeth shifted out of alignment because of additional jaw growth. I am now 23 and recently decided to get another set of braces to fix all of that. I'll be in braces until December of 2007, but they aren't really that bad at all. When I was younger they were all metal and pretty obvious. Now they have Invisiline for minor alignment issues, and they can put clear brackets on instead of metal ones for major alignment. I have clear brackets right now, and it really does make a difference.

To sum up... Yes, you will probably need braces, and you'll probably need them after some sort of oral surgery or procedure. No, braces aren't that bad, and you'll definitely be happy you went through it once you're finished.
