Are oral irrigation machines(I have the Hydrofloss) a hoax?

I've been using the Hydrofloss oral irrigation machine for a few months now per the recommendation of my dentist. I've been using it on a very high setting thinking I would get maximum benefits from using a very high setting. However, I've noticed that the gumline on one of my canine teeth is very receded. Im almost positive its from using too high a setting on the Hydrofloss. I've also noticed what appears to be chips in my teeth. And now Im wondering if these oral irrigation machines are not only beneficial but whether they actually do more harn than good. If I have to use a lower power setting on the machine to irrigate my teeth and gums I might as well just be swishing vigorously with water and mouthwatch. Im starting to form very negative feelings about this product from my personal experience of having used it for a few months and gotten negative results. But I always keep an open mind. I would appreciate all comments/tips for those who have used one for at least 3 months. Thanks

If you have bad gingivitis and it gets better, the result is a receded gum. Yep, improving your gums can cause them to recede, not that you shouldn't.

I would be careful with the irrigator, but it cannot chip your teeth. It can damage your gums, but I think that is mostly if you use subgingival tips on high power.

I would still generally only use half power to be safe.
Reply:No wonder your dentist recommended this stupid and totally unnecessary machine. It has succeeded in giving him or her work for a year. He/she must have thought you were an opportunity ripe for the taking. It would seem that his/her ethics leave a lot to be desired.
