Is it possible to get retainer without getting braces again?

Im not so happy with my smile.my tooth next to the canine in the front is a bit shifted(kinda goes in) and it's been bugging the hell out of me because it was shifted before my braces was removed! after i got my braces off for several months i went back and complained about it and the doc was like it's fine and he did something to the retainer but it didnt help and im pretty pissed off. its been 2 years and i plan on going back fixing that one tooth. i didnt pay thousands of $$ for a shifted tooth!

i wear my retainers as directed all the time but it didnt help. like i said, tooth was shifted before braces were removed. so the retainer was made that way too like the mold.

just wondering could i get a top bar permanent retainer?

No. your retainer was built to hold your teeth in place when your braces came off, so your teeth wouldn't shift back to their original position. If your retainer has been out for two years, it is most likely that your teeth have shifted to their permanent spot, and healed, so even if you did get another retainer fitted, would there really be a point if your teeth are in their permanent spots already? Get the tooth removed, and get braces in that area, so the surrounding teeth will fill in the gap, or just leave it. no one will notice. i assure you. i hope i helped. good luck!
Reply:Hi there,

Im not knowledgeable with your relationship with your orthodontist but usually - braces would not be removed unless you and your doctor was satisfied.

Having said that - I can't see the tooth so its hard to say if this will work but if it has shifted in a minor way. There may be a few things that can be done (but this all depends on the severity of the shift and in which direction):

1. new retainer with built in springs to adjust for position (this would be for minor movements only).

2. Invisalign Express - its like a short # of trays designed to address minor issues like this (if you have the space for the tooth to realign).

3. Redo braces - if you have the space to realign, shouldn't take long at all.

And yes, some orthodontists definitely do what we call, permanent lingual retainers both on the upper and lower arch. But it is usually your 4 upper front teeth and 6 lower front teeth. So after you correct it - you may want to ask him/her for an "essix" type retainer - it looks like an Invisalign tray and if you wear it, it will hold your teeth exactly where they are.

Good luck!
