When Should I Wear My Orthodontic Elastics (Rubber Bands)???

I just starteed wear ortho. elastics for the third time, but this time with a different pattern. The rubber band is shaped like an "M" in my teeth, starting with the bottom canine and wrapping around until it hooks on the thrid to last molar.

While I usually wear them all the time, REALLY hate wearing these, because it feels like my jaw is clamped shut. I can hardly open my mouth wide enough to talk, and when I do I look like I'm in pain. I was wondering if it's neccesary to wear these ALL the time. I was thinking of not wearing them during school, so I can actually talk and don't look like I'm dying. If I don't wear them during school, will it really affect how long I have to wear them? Will my teeth move (or not move)?

I'm supposed to get my braces off soon, and only have to wear the elastics for a month, so I don't want to set that back. I just want to be able to talk. If it's such a big deal should I talk to my ortho. about all this or just not wear them in school?

When Should I Wear My Orthodontic Elastics (Rubber Bands)???
I know your pain! I had to wear elastics for a while before I got my braces off. And the last week I had braces my ortho had me lace together both sides of my mouth with these large elastics. I had to hook it to my farthest bottom tooth and then the one above it and then the one below it and so on until I laced the top and bottom of my mouth together like a shoe! I couldn't move my mouth at all! It was sooo embarrasing at school because I couldn't talk hardly at all just muffled sounds for a whole week! Anyways after one week with that I got my braces off! Okay so for your question, I would wear them 24/7 so your mouth will move the way your ortho wants it to. And the more you wear them the sooner your mouth will move into postion and the sooner your braces will come off! My sister is starting elastics also and she didn't wear hers all the time like she was supposed to and the ortho is having her do another 3 weeks with them(yout wouldn't want that)! When I had braces I wore them all the time except for meals and I got to move on quickly with the elastic process. Also try stretching the elastics a bit so you can move your mouth a little better. And you'll find that after your mouth gets used to the pain the pain becomes less and you can use your mouth more. Good luck!
Reply:you should ask your orthodontist
Reply:Best to ask your orthodentist!
Reply:I WOULD WAIT TILL THE DOCTOR SAYS IT'S OK NOT TO WEAR THEM ANY LONGER.
Reply:I know it really sucks to have elastics--I had them for a year and a half of my orthodontic treatment. However, it's best for you if you wear them constantly. The process in which the elastics work is that they exert pressure on your jaw bones. This causes your body to move the bones by constantly removing a bone cell here and adding a new bone cell there. The problem with not wearing them all day is, though, because this is a very delicate process. Just like a constant coffee drinker eventually becomes desensitized to the caffeine and needs to drink more coffee than before to get the same buzz, if you wear your elastics only for a portion of the day your body will get the wrong message. It will disregard the pressure and progress on your jaw will be seriously impeded. A month of elastics could easily become a year. Bear with it and by the time you are over with this whole ordeal you will have a straight, beautiful mouth. Consult with your ortho for further info. Good luck!
Reply:It sounds like your orthodontist is trying to finish your braces up. If you don't wear your elastics all the time like the orthodontist asked you to, then the teeth won't move and settle into the position they're supposed to be in. If you only have to wear them for a month, then it's probably best to suck it up and wear them. Otherwise, the next time you go in, your orthodontist will tell you "one more month". Not wearing the elastics all the time will set you back and you'll be in braces longer. I see it all the time....
