One for the dentists - root canal, trauma, infection etc...?

Background:

About 2 years ago I developed an abcess in I think a lateral incisor. An x-ray revealed that some kind of truma had damaged that tooth and the canine next to it, turning the roots black (apparently trauma and not infection since the black areas weren't linked.) I was given a root canal without anesthetic on the incisor which was great, no problem, it was dead and I didn't feel a thing. Then my dentist tried to give me the same on the canine next to it and it hurt like hell, turned out it was still alive although black root on x-ray. We left it alone.

I got a really bad cold this week and for the past two days I've been getting a dull ache from that area of my mouth. I've tried tapping the teeth to check for an abcess but can't detect one, there's no sensitivity to hot or cold either. I'm going to get to the dentist once the cold clears up (they won't touch you while you're ill!) but meanwhile any idea what's going on?

I'm taking ibuprofen and paracetamol for the ache.

You are, more than likely, experiencing a sinus ache from your cold, which is radiating into your tooth. This is especially noticeable on molars but also can effect cuspids. It should clear up as your cold subsides.
Reply:he should have given you an Anestassia immediately %26amp; done the root cannal treatment.
Reply:I think when your cold clears,so will your dull pain.Usually when one gets any headcold illness, the person is "stuffed up",therefore leading to the nerves of the facial area to "think" they are sore (ears ,eyes, nose, mouth area).
Reply:You probably have a sinus infection. Is the tooth up the top?

The fluid in your sinuses sit on top of the roots of your top teeth.( Or I should say the roots poke up into the sinus cavity) If you run downstairs and it hurts then thats it.

If not then your canine is probably playing up.
