Retainers?

about a year ago i had a wobbly baby tooth but was too wimpish to pull it out so the adult tooth came through behind the baby one so now i have very straight teeth apart from this left canine that is indented, i went to the orthopedic woman at my dentistry and she said she'd put a retainer on me for 5 - 8 months and a bit of plastic on my molars so i can't fully shut my mouth, after thats all over i'll have a small bit of wire behind the neighbouring and the problematic tooth so it stays straight. i can't question her too much as she's a very busy woman so can anyone tell me how long i'll have the bits of plastic, how much it'll hurt, how difficult it'll make eating and sleeping and will it look horrible?

Retainers?
At first, you'll probably have difficulties eating and might not be able to get to sleep the first night because you're not used to the plastic bits in your mouth. But after a while, you should get used to it and won't be bothered that much anymore.
